Has anyone every fit a 50mm scope to a savage axis?  I bought it mounted with a 3-9 40mm, but I'd like to upgrade it something like a 4-16.  I would settle for a 4-16 40mm but would really like a 50mm instead.  How would I verify this before buying one?  Seems like the best prices are online and I don't want to have to mess with sending it back just because it didn't fit.  The clearance between the bell of the 40mm and the barrel is kind of tight, less then my pinky finger.  What I don't know is if I got higher setting rings if that would allow the 50 the clearance it needs.

Any ideas or experience with the model and scope sizes appreciated!!

Buy a 50mm scope, if it doesn't fit, buy new rings, you can bring it to your local gunshop and verify the new rings will fit. Dont talk yourself out of a scope cause of rings. Also, if new rings are needed, dont get chincy, burris tactical rings go on all my systems. 50 bucks, my 15 pound 22-250 fell off my bed 2 nights ago and crashed on my scope from 3.5 feet, my jaw hit the floor also! went to the range yesterday and tried some hand loads, that's another story, but with factory 40 gr winchester"white box" cheap ammo I shot the best group to date, 1-1/8th" @ 200 yards center to center, 9/16th" moa, anyways I spent the money to make that possible, that was my reassurance that it was $ well spent, now I am confident that's my scope will hold its zero, " a $10,000 scope is useless without proper mounting"
