Tack driver. next time out I will get some pics of the targets. 100yds and 4 shots in the size of a quarter. Bought this stock unfinished from Boyds. Had to do a little inletting for the barrel since it is a heavy barrel but other than that it was just sanding and finishing.

The gun was purchased new and wouldn't group at all so he sent it back to Weatherby and they then sent it back to him and  told him to take it to a gun smith to have the barrel lapped. Don't know if it was fire lapped or lead lapped but he said it now shoots fine. Well, I'm not looking for fine, I am looking for great. I don't want to buy this gun and have it only shoot 1 1/2" groups at a hundred. I know and have seen first hand other budget rifles that shoot 3/4 MOA and that is more of what I am looking for. I guess my question would be will or does this gun still have the potetial after all it has been through? I am just a little leary about a new gun that has to be lapped to get it to shoot OK.

Nice gun, a friend has one of those guns. I told him about 2 weeks ago to by a stock similar to yours from stockys on sale for like 140, he is a fool for not doing so. I did get him to buy some reloading dies thou. It is a very solid gun and caliber. Anyways, let us know how she shoots, she is a pretty peice

How old is the rifle? Besides new barrels re-lapping is usually done on very old barrels that have scratches or pitting which effects the accuracy of the weapon. My main question would be did the lapping correct the groups?  Chances are if the owner lapped it they fire lapped it. Check the bore and make sure it is clean. You shouldn't have to worry about it unless their idea of lapping was to run sand paper down the barrel.

Spent 2 full days in the shop so I would guess about 16 hours of work in the rifle and about 8 hours of sanding and oiling the stock. The action is fully blue printed. I will put another 4 hours or so into the stock before she is where I want her. Fabricating the The bolt handle and polishing the bolt took more time than anything else. I have about 6 hours in the bolt.

4 hours of sanding before the oiling started and then about an hour per day with steel wool and re-coat. she is wearing 5 layers of Tru-Oil in the pics and I am shooting for 10-12 layers before I buff the final finish.

I bought a 308 for many reasons, ammo surplus, reloading data and options, fair long range ballistics, and a time tested caliber. With all that being said the 7mm caliber is a nice setup in all options, the 7mm-08 being the closest in compairing to the 308, the ballistics of the 7mm shows promise in bc which many people think is a minor detail but at longer ranges make a hell of a difference. wind drift  is in my mind one of the hardest parts of shooting at the distances, in the 7mm-08 168 vs 308 175 at 1000 yards the 7mm-08 has a 24" advantage in wind drift in a 10mph and a 48" in drop, that is a fair differance in my book. the 7mm-08 being the weakest of the 7mm , the long action mags share more of the features with even better wind and drop with higher speeds, the wind drift of a 7mm rum vs a 308 is 4.5 mils against 9 mils. that is 90" vs 45" in wind drift! that is huge!

Here are some pics of my 6.5 build. Still going to add more layers of Tru-Oil and buff the stock.
